When hitting out of a greenside bunker, the club never actually makes contact with the ball. The club slides under the ball displacing the sand… and as a result… the ball comes out with the sand. Therefore… it is important that the sand is splashed far enough to get out of the bunker. Try this, when practicing and without a ball, practice taking divots in the bunker and swinging big enough so that sand comes out of the bunker. For most… this means making a much bigger finish position. Once you’ve mastered hitting sand out of the bunker, place a ball down, and swing with your focus on hitting sand out of the bunker… not the ball. The result? The ball will get carried out of the bunker with the sand.
