The rules of golf exist so that the game is played fairly. It will suit you well to take the time and learn them… at least some of the common ones. The rules of golf provide the BEST option, which could mean saving strokes… and ANGUISH!

Have you ever rated your practice swing? If not… you should. After all, the practice swing is a rehearsal of the actual swing you want to make for the shot at hand. Take a practice swing and rate it on a scale of “1″ to “10″ where “1″ is horrible and “10″ is like “WOW!” If you rate your practice swing “8″ or above, then step up to the ball and duplicate what you’ve just rehearsed. If it was less than an “8,” take another one (time permitting!). Being mindful of your practice swing will increase the opportunity for a successful shot.

When a baseball pitcher is in his set up… his eyes are on the target… the catcher’s glove. When he begins his “wind-up” routine… his eyes are on the target… the catcher’s glove. When he releases the ball… his eyes are on the target… the catcher’s glove. When he follows through… yup… his eyes are on the catcher’s glove. In golf… too many golfers become ball fixated, rather than target fixated. Next time you’re on the golf course… and you’re in your preshot routine… spend more time looking at the target… and less time looking at the ball.

Positive thinking alone will not help you score better if you lack sound swing mechanics. However, proper swing mechanics alone will not help you score better if you lack positive thinking. It’s a combination of both. Therefore I believe the game of golf is 100% mental and 100% mechanical. The two can’t be separated. When practicing… work on both. At times practice mechanics… at times practice sport psychology… but oftentimes… practice BOTH!

Therefore, I suggest focusing on maintaining a grip pressure of about a “3″ to “5″ especially through the hitting zone.

The basic short chip shot… one that is only a few feet off the green… is one that everyone should be able to master. The problem I see as an instructor is that too many golfers try to add lift to the ball… rather than keeping it low. The best opportunity for success is to use a 6-iron or 7-iron, grip it like you grip your putter, use the set up you would for putting (since the club will be more upright, you will discover that the toe of the club is on the ground, not the entire sole… and that’s okay!), and finally, use the stroke you would use in putting. Done correctly, the ball should pop up in the air just enough to get over any “junk” and roll like a putt.
